Why Testing Yourself Beats Re-Reading

Highlighting and re-reading feel like studying. Fifty years of memory research say they are among the weakest things you can do — and that the humble quiz is one of the most powerful.

Ask most people how they revise and you will hear the same answer: they read the material, then read it again, maybe with a highlighter in hand. It feels like work, and it feels like it is working — the text gets more familiar with every pass. That feeling is exactly the problem. Familiarity is not the same as memory, and the strategies that make studying feel smooth are usually the ones that leave the least behind.

The alternative has an unglamorous name — retrieval practice, or the “testing effect” — and a striking amount of evidence behind it. The idea is simple: instead of putting information in again by re-reading, you pull it back out by testing yourself. The act of retrieving a fact is what strengthens the memory of it. Reading is passive; recall is the workout.

The experiment that flipped the script

The landmark demonstration came from cognitive scientists Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke, in a 2006 paper in Psychological Science. Students read short prose passages, then either studied them again or sat a simple recall test with no feedback — no marking, no answers, just the effort of remembering. Afterwards they were tested at different delays: five minutes, two days, or a week later.

The short-term result was the one that fools everyone. After five minutes, the students who had re-read the passage did slightly better. If the study had stopped there, re-reading would look like the winner. But memory that matters is measured in days, not minutes — and a week later the pattern reversed hard. The students who had tested themselves remembered substantially more, out-recalling the re-readers by roughly twenty percentage points.

What felt more effective in the moment turned out to be the worse strategy for anything you actually need to remember.

It is not just memorising facts

A fair objection is that a recall test only helps with rote facts — fine for dates and definitions, useless for real understanding. A 2011 study in Science, again from Karpicke with Janell Blunt, put that to the test. They pitted retrieval practice against “elaborative studying” with concept mapping — a technique that is supposed to build deep, connected understanding.

Retrieval practice won, and not only on straightforward recall. It also produced better performance on questions that required students to draw inferences and connect ideas they had never been directly asked about. Practising getting information out did more for genuine comprehension than the method explicitly designed to build it.

The most popular methods are the least effective

In 2013 a team of five researchers led by John Dunlosky reviewed the evidence on ten common study techniques for Psychological Science in the Public Interest, rating each on how well it actually works. The results are quietly damning for how most of us were taught to study.

Two techniques earned the top “high utility” rating: practice testing and distributed practice (spreading study out over time rather than cramming). And the methods rated low utility? Highlighting, underlining, re-reading and summarising — precisely the ones most students reach for first. The single most common revision strategy in the world is also one of the least effective.

Why does difficulty help?

The counter-intuitive part is that the effortis the point. Psychologist Robert Bjork calls these “desirable difficulties”: conditions that make learning feel harder and slower in the moment but produce stronger, more durable memory. Struggling to recall an answer — even failing to, then seeing it — does more than smoothly reading that same answer off the page. Ease feels like progress; difficulty is where the learning is.

This is also why re-reading is so seductive. Each pass feels easier than the last, and we read that fluency as mastery. Retrieval practice removes the illusion: the moment you try to recall something and can’t, you get honest, immediate feedback about what you actually know.

How to use it, in practice

The research points to a handful of concrete habits that beat the highlighter:

Close the book and ask questions. After reading a section, look away and write down everything you can remember, or answer a few questions on it. The retrieval is what counts, not the re-reading.

Use flashcards for recall, not recognition. Force yourself to produce the answer before flipping the card. Simply recognising the right answer in a list is far weaker than generating it from scratch.

Space it out.Ten minutes of self-testing on three different days beats thirty minutes in one sitting. Distributed practice was the other “high utility” winner for a reason.

Let yourself get it wrong. A failed recall attempt, followed by the correct answer, is one of the most powerful learning events there is. Wrong answers are not wasted — they are the mechanism.

The quiz was ahead of us all along

There is a nice irony in all of this. The quiz — long treated as the dull thing at the end, the assessment, the test you revise for — turns out to be one of the best tools for the learning itself. Every question is a small act of retrieval, which is exactly what the research says builds durable memory.
