The Forgetting Curve Is Real. Here Is How to Beat It

Within a few days you will have forgotten most of what you learned today. That is not a personal failing — it is a curve that has been measured for nearly a century and a half. The good news is that the same research tells you exactly how to fight it.

In the 1880s a German psychologist named Hermann Ebbinghaus did something slightly mad. He sat alone, memorising thousands of nonsense syllables — strings like ZOF and QAX, chosen precisely because they meant nothing and could not be propped up by anything he already knew — and then tested, hour by hour and day by day, how much he could still recall. He was his own only subject, and the experiment ran for years.

What he plotted became one of the most durable findings in all of psychology: the forgetting curve. Memory for new material does not fade in a gentle, straight line. It falls off a cliff. Most of what is going to be lost is lost quickly — within hours and days — after which the decline flattens into a long, slow tail. The steepest part of the drop is right at the start, which is why the lecture you understood perfectly on Monday can feel like a stranger’s notes by Friday.

Why re-learning feels like failure — and isn’t

Here is the part Ebbinghaus noticed that most people miss. When he came back to a list he had “forgotten” and learned it again, the second time was faster. Something had stayed behind, below the level he could consciously recall. He called the gap between how long it took the first time and the second time savings — and it is the quiet engine behind everything that follows. Each time you revisit material, you are not starting from zero. You are topping up a memory that has faded but not vanished.

Forgetting is not the opposite of learning. It is the condition that makes the next review so powerful.

The single most reliable fix: space it out

If forgetting is fastest at the start, the obvious move is to review before the memory has fully collapsed — and then again later, and again later still, each review flattening the curve a little more. Reviewing after a gap is called distributed (or spaced) practice, and its opposite — doing all your studying in one block — is what most of us call cramming.

The evidence here is not a single cute experiment; it is a mountain. In 2006, Nicholas Cepeda and colleagues pulled together the scattered research of a century into one enormous review for Psychological Bulletin, covering 317 experiments drawn from 184 articles. The verdict was blunt and one-directional: spreading study across separate sessions beat massing it into one, again and again, across wildly different materials and learners. Spacing is not a marginal trick. It is one of the most robust effects psychology has.

How big is the gap supposed to be?

“Space it out” raises an obvious question: space it out by how much? A day? A week? A month? In 2008 Cepeda’s team ran the study that actually pinned this down, published in Psychological Science. More than 1,350 people learned a set of facts, came back for a single review after a gap of anywhere from minutes to three and a half months, then sat a final test up to a year later.

The result was an elegant curve of its own. For any given test date, a bigger gap between the first study and the review helped — up to a point — and then started to hurt. The best gap grew as the final test moved further away. As a rough rule of thumb, the ideal gap works out to somewhere around 10 to 20 percent of how far away the test is. Revising for something a week off? Space your sessions a day or so apart. Something a year off? The sweet spot stretches to a month or more between reviews.

You do not need to hit that window with a stopwatch — the curve is broad and forgiving, and any spacing beats none. But it does explain why the classic student move of one heroic all-nighter is so inefficient. Cramming loads the memory once, right before the point of maximum forgetting, and then abandons it.

The same hours of study, chopped up and spread across days, can produce dramatically more durable memory than one long session — for no extra effort.

What this looks like in real life

The research turns into a handful of habits that cost nothing but a little planning:

Break one long session into several short ones. Three twenty-minute reviews on three different days will almost always beat one sixty-minute marathon. It is the same hour, arranged better.

Review just as it starts to fade. You do not need perfect timing — the point is to come back after a gap, while recall takes a bit of effort, not to re-read something you still know cold.

Stretch the gaps as the material sticks. A day, then a few days, then a week, then a fortnight. Each successful recall earns a longer wait before the next one — this is the logic behind every good flashcard app.

Combine spacing with self-testing, not re-reading. The gap is only half the story. What you do inside each session matters too: trying to recall the answer beats passively reading it again. Spacing and retrieval practice are the two techniques that top every ranking of what actually works.
